According to an experiment by financial comparison site Finder, a basket of 38 stocks selected by ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, outperformed 10 leading investment funds in the United Kingdom. Between March 6 and April 28, the dummy portfolio gained 4.9% while the 10 investment funds suffered an average loss of 0.8%. Finder CEO Jon Ostler believes that it won't be long before consumers try to use the chatbot for financial gains.
The experiment compared the performance of ChatGPT-generated fund with the 10 most popular UK funds on trading platform Interactive Investor, including those managed by HSBC and Fidelity. Analysts asked ChatGPT to select stocks based on common criteria such as low debt levels and stable growth records. Some of the selected companies included Microsoft, Netflix, and Walmart. With the rise of AI technology, retail investors may soon have access to tools previously reserved for major fund managers.
A recent survey revealed that 8% of UK adults have already used ChatGPT for financial advice, and 19% would consider doing so. However, 35% would not consider using the chatbot for financial decisions. While AI chatbots like ChatGPT show promise in disrupting the financial industry, Ostler advises individual investors to still conduct their own research or consult qualified financial professionals before trusting AI with their finances.
